Modules Ideas

I might get on that. I just have to redo some firmware for another project first.

I already feel that the system has many versatile modules that give exciting results. What I’m currently missing, though, is a multiple module. The main reason is simply that I often find myself wanting to split signals. It would make patching much more flexible, especially when sending the same modulation, gate, or CV to several destinations at once.

A clock divider might be something worth considering. It would be very practical to generate additional pulses and rhythmic variations to work with. Having different subdivisions available directly in the rack could open up more movement and interaction between modules without relying on external gear.

I would also be interested in a simple reverb module and a phaser. Even something straightforward would add a lot in terms of depth and movement, and make it easier to shape the overall character of the sound directly within the rack.

A buffered multiple feels like a need.
An ADSR envelope would be nice.
I’m otherwise pretty pleased with what’s available.

Something I have missed several times now is an AND gate:

  • When using an envelope as LFO, it would be nice to sync it with an external clock or trigger pulse i.e. combining the “end of cycle” output with the clock before going into the trigger input.
  • When building a sequencer out of counter+stylo (+diodes) an AND gate could combine the gate out from the stylo with the clock that drives the counter. That way two consecutive notes would sound as two individual notes instead of triggering the envelope only once.

I am still thinking about a Kraftwerk/Synthanorma-style sequencer, i.e. with 12-position switches instead of potentiometers. Plain 12-position switches are not available in a small enough size for microrack (where would they put the 13 pins?), but encoding switches are.
Of course that would pose the interesting problem of how to convert 4-bit binary code into the correct control voltage.

Edit: maybe I am too fixated on sequencing melodies. One can and should sequence other things than pitch to great effect, as Anthony Marinelli and Alex Ball demonstrate.
