Looking for Guitar use cases

Hi guys,

I’m looking for fun inspiration that could be the right job for the Microrack stuff for my guitar
I’m gathering inspiration to see what the potential for my context would be

I’ve learned about this project via the MOD audio forum, where user @ignis32 (present here too :D) was talking about this tech.

Since you recently launched the KS campaign, the video and info taught me something more but I’m looking for inspiration guitar wise.

currently, I do all my pre-amp, amp sim, cab sim and effects on the MOD audio Dwarf, a versatile programmable effects unit unlike the others.

Experimental guitar

I have a “experiment guitar” with a Submarine pro pickup that features 6 seperate pickups; one per string. I can send each string to an output A, B or both.

I don’t want 2 outputs on my guitar but what if… I would route the strings of my choosing into some modules IN the guitar and mix them with the original siginal from the other strings. (introduce a blend of sawtooth with the regular clean signal for the bottom 2 strings for instance)

Would it make sense do to that so early in the chain?

What other wack ideas could you come up with to expand the posibilities of this guitar by augmenting it with microrack tech?

Could this tech for instance be used somehow to trigger and even play samples through the guitar signal ? can’t think of much people doing that already?

All ideas welcome, I’m gathering inspiration

Me and my band

My band is a kind of Thrash/punk/heavy metal gig that’s looking for fresh and wack ideas like industrial influences, sampling, etc…

I like to tinker with effects and amp modelling but I’m by no means a techy guy that can solder complex circuits or program all that stuff. At a certain point I will need help in that dept. In the first place, I’m a musician, marketeer, (grapahical) artist and IT/business generalist

Excuse me in advance for giving an actually non-microrack suggestion but, I am not that proficient with the modular audio processing stuff enough to make any meaningful input yet.

To my guess (I might be wrong!) adding sawtooth as a double for what you are playing - would require a pitch tracking module, probably one per string (I’ve found a reddit thread on that for eurorack: https://www.reddit.com/r/modular/comments/106b2m5/are_there_any_other_pitch_tracking_modules_like/) and it seems expensive even for a one module like that, plus requires eurorack frame to install. Maybe there are other methods I did not consider that are not relying on the pitch tracking (ring mod mb? I have no idea how it works, and if it can be implemented as microrack effect, but it is kinda synth’y to some extent)

However if you do not mind actual computer in your chain - I found MidiGuitar2 VST plugin to be able to parse sound into midi notes in real time quite nicely even from polyphonic input. With a six input audio card and 6 audio streams from your hex pickup - you can have 6 instances of MG2 plugin in the DAW to do tracking independently, and therefore 6 midi streams, that can be used as you like, with whatever synths, including microrack. Note that any pitch tracking devices/software require some special attention to the playing technique, to evade false note detections - you have to play quite clean, so it is not a silver bullet.

Also there is MG3 beta with MPE support that became available recently.

I would definitely try my Chapman Stick via MG2/3 as a MIDI controller for Microrack when I get it

I am viewing some videos for modular stuff used as a guitar processor, and looks like

LFO + VCA should be a Tremolo effect.
LFO + VCF should be a Wah effect.
Sequencer + VCA should be some kind of a Chop effect

Not very wacky actually, but that’s a first not very deep stuff I could understand so far.

A ring modulator would certainly sound crazy, especially if you ring-modulate one string with the others (or vice versa). Probably too crazy already.
AFAIK there is no ring modulator microrack module (yet), but a VCA might serve instead, if it happens to be fast enough.

We have VCA module with ringmodulator capability (control input of the VCA is bipolar), and we plan to add VCA feature to mixer module.

Hi, I’m glad to see you come to our community!

looks like very cool feature for performance!

Yes, you can modulate one string by another. Also you can route one string to envelope module and use it as envelope follower to create CV and use dedicated string only for control.

Create frequcency doubler is actually complicated, but with counter module you can create frequency divider to create cool 8-bit like subtone.

Think i also saw that some logic modules are in the works. You should also be able to create a ring mod using these as well.
